My usual approach is to mount the volume where the backuppc package
for the linux distribution expects it before installing the package.
Then you don't have to change or move anything.  On a Centos system
that would be /var/lib/BackupPC.   Also, when using external drives,
be sure you have reformatted them with a linux filesystem type that
supports hard links.
