that seems to rule out some things that spring to mind (like missing or
incorrect configuration files in /etc/backuppc ...). Hmm, or does it? What
do you mean by "run BackupPC"? Do the BackupPC installations on source and
destination machine agree on where the configuration is stored, and did
you copy it? I believe it is (or used to be) possible to store the
configuration below $TopDir/conf (which would be copied along with "the pool"
without much thought), but package installations seem to prefer locations
below /etc (and I agree with them), which you would have to copy separately.
Well, missing that *would* explain what you are seeing ;-).

Did you try to write to the disk as backuppc user from a shell? Did you try
to write as root?
