This is an old, old problem, reported 2-3 years ago. It has to do with
BackupPC mis-interpreting output from Samba's 'smbtar.' Check the
archives of this list for specifics.
Don't know if it was ever addressed--as it appeared to have very low
priority. I gave up on SMB backups and moved over to rsync.
