My first two thoughts were "good idea" and "incompatible". How about doing both: Without any extra action, bconsole / the DIR behave like they do today. But add an extra switch at the global bconsole prompt similar to the .gui one, perhaps ".incompatible-menus" which changes the behaviour to what Phil suggests. More work, but more flexibility.
