Yes, it boots on all my laptops quite nicely -- I just have to enable USB boot 
in the bios.  In any case, it seems pretty clear to me that this (USB boot) 
is the direction we are going.  

What is nice about this USB key, is you simply plug it in, then copy files to 
your home directory on the key and when you boot there are just there.  There 
are a few details, but nothing complicated.  Much easier than trying to 
update a CDROM :-)

Ah, yes, perhaps that was the trick.  Boot a LiveCD then plugin the USB key.
