I believe the idea is that a VirtualFull turns the last Incremental into a Full, on which you can base new Differentials and Incrementals. The dates then represent the dates at which files were actually backed up, rather than the dates at which the VirtualFull ran. Which makes a certain kind of sense, since all the code doing restores (for example) looks at the dates to decide what files to select.
