I had some ideas about this a while back, but didn't do anything with 
it.  You'd need a pretty big pipe to not make the wait unbearable 
during backups.  There are ways you could do caching, background 
uploading, etc.

What I ended up doing is backing up to a local disk then doing nightly 
syncs up to S3.  Works fairly well, with the downside that you can't 
have more stored on S3 than you have space for locally.

As for my ideas, search the devel archives for a thread entitled "Couple 
questions about using a "disk-changer"" in August of 2008.
