I regenerate "configure" with:

make configure

there is nothing that I know of that is simpler than that.

Yes, that shows how we work, small changes of a few lines for maintenance or 
implementation or removal of features that have long been planned.

Yes, it completely hides the changes, and moves configure.in where we don't 
want it.
