I can't find any documentation on software compression that comes with
bacula. In particular, I would like to know whether the compression is
done on the client or server side. The reason for that is I would like
to minimise the traffic during the backup for the remote servers.

Here's the respective section from the manual:
http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/Configuring_Director.html#SECTION000147000000000000000
- ----------------------
compression=GZIP
All files saved will be software compressed using the GNU ZIP
compression format. The compression is done on a file by file basis by
the ***File daemon***.

Software compression is very important if you are writing your
Volumes to a file, and it can also be helpful if you have a fast
computer but a slow network, otherwise it is generally better to rely
your tape drive's hardware compression. As noted above, it is not
generally a good idea to do both software and hardware compression.
- ----------------------

File daemon = the client and as the manual states, sw compression does
minimize the traffic on the network (OK, the manual says that it is
'helpful if you have [...] a slow network').

The second question is what types of compression is available? I found
the reference that bacula supports GZIP compression. Is there support
for BZIP?

There's no support for bzip2. As far as I know, gzip is the only
compression format currently supported.

Greetings,
       Michel
