I had (have) a lot of problems to get grub to install correctly.  Some of them 
have something to do with the special files it needs to do the install.  
However, what I found was that it was often better to manually do the 
grub-install as described in the Rescue chapter (if I remember right) -- or 
at least the final script for doing the grub install tells you how to do it 
manually.  The advantage of doing it manually is that you can "see" when 
something goes wrong ...

Since HP always likes to fiddle the OS to be non-standard, there may be some 
additional considerations to get it to work right.  One last resort might be 
to try to install your kernel rpm (assuming you have rpms on your OS).
