I got this message in my logs from the backup run last night:

Volume "Monthly-0004" because:
The number of files mismatch! Volume=0 Catalog=112
... I'll remove the bls output below: It showed a count of 112 tape
files, which corresponds to what the catalog has.
That said, the question is "Why does the SD need 4 minutes to find that
there are no file marks on tape?"
I don't know the answer.
BUT I'd suggest that you do the following:
- Check the system log for any tape or SCSI related errors. Use tapeinfo
to see the tape drive's status.
- Stop the SD, power-cycle the tape drive, make sure it is available to
the OS again, start SD, try again. Again, use tapeinfo.
- unmount the tape drive from bconsole so you can use it from the shell.
Write-protect the tape cartridge (you never know...). Using mt and mtx
or equivalent, unload and reload the tape. Use mt to space to EOD. Use
tapeinfo. If spacing to EOD doesn't work, or tapeinfo reports file
position 0 then, you've got the error reproduced. I that case, try
another tape, and, if the error persists, use the (hopefully available)
diagnostic software for the drive, or call their support line :-)
- If that problem persists with that one tape, but everything else is
ok, including other tapes (you might want to run a couple of btape tests
with a spare tape), you've got a worn-out or otherwise broken tape which
produces an interesting error situation.
Hope this helps,
Arno
