Hi Arno,
thanks for your reply, looks like you're from Germany too :-)
Yes. But I would have replied if you were from somewhere else, too :-)
I find this astonishing. Admittedly, I never used a debian packaged
installation, but instead, when I first encountered Bacula, I started
with a blank DIR configuration and, reading the manual, managed to get
a working setup rather easily.
Well, to be honest, I'd like to use it the "Debian way" as intended by
the people who preconfigured it. So starting from scratch might not be
that easy, or a little bit of a hassle (because of path settings, etc.).
The good thing about Debian ist the packaging. I've seen that there are
some other Users who are using Debian Sarge. Maybe some of them could
tell me if I'm missing a package?

If I'm missing something, please tell me. There's something I found out
myself already. If you don't choose the bacula-mysql package the
standard one is postgresql and will be installed automatically. I've
changed that now to mysql.
If you can't start the DIR with the sample configuration, just work
through the manual. To start the DIR, you need nly a limited set of
configuration sections:
Director, Messages, Catalog and probably Pool. I feel that the sample
configuration with a very limited number of changes should be
sufficient to start the DIR with a configuration tailored to your
sites needs.
Well maybe you could be so kind to take a fast glimpse at my config.
I've already changed the references and setup DNS, baculahost.anytest.de
and baculaserver.anytest.de.
host bacula-fd.conf file: http://nopaste.debianforum.de/2728
server bacula-sd.conf file: http://nopaste.debianforum.de/2730
Ok, I only looked at the DIR configuration for now, and...
server bacula-director.conf file: http://nopaste.debianforum.de/2732
... it looks like a default sample configuration with only minor
changes. Names and addresses mainly.
Sure. But please try to strip the configuration down to the minimum,
try it and report any error messages. I don't think that the DIR
refuses to start without giving some sort of reason for it. If there
are no messages, and you verified that no DIR process is running,
retry starting the DIR, with debug output enabled: -d 50 should give
you lots of messages on the terminal.
As you can see there already some smart people who took care of such
problems. Nopaste is a nice feature of this website. Helped me alot in
the past, also to help others.
Ha, I even found the logfile, here is the error message:
baculaserver:/etc/bacula# tail /var/lib/bacula/log
Volume name(s):
Volume Session Id: 0
Volume Session Time: 0
Last Volume Bytes: 0
Non-fatal FD errors: 0
SD Errors: 0
FD termination status:
SD termination status:
Termination: *** Backup Error ***
baculaserver:/etc/bacula#
This does look as though the DIR is running correctly. The above snippet
is not a DIR log, but rather the end of a job report.
Only after you've got the DIR running work on the SD and FD setup, and
Jobs and Filesets etc.
That means it should not be a problem to start the director without the
rest of the components, that's good. That should also mean, that the
error message I get could only be generated from the
bacula-director.conf, am I right?
Right, but what is your error message?
Or, thinking the other way round - can you use bconsole and connect to
the DIR to submit commands to it?
Arno
Thanks for your patience,
Jens
