Have you tried to use the dvd-handler script with the command "prepare"? 
I'm not absolutely sure that this does anything helpful for you, but I 
do know that it wasn't easy to find the solution for the problem you see 
when I tried DVD-writing... if it doesn't work, try dvd+rw-format (or 
whatever it's called) and its options (and report what you found).
