I got it to work. I had to add the following line
to /etc/postgresql/8.1/main/pg_hba.conf:
host bacula bacula,root 127.0.0.1/32 trust
Bacula is connecting with TCP/IP, not a Unix domain socket. This was confusing
me. Thanks for your help.
