Look at the following bug report:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=208782
it seems that the SuSE kernel has some serious problem. These might not
be the identical problems you observe, but check for yourself!

In the bug notes, you'll also find a work-around: use a newer kernel.
