Does anyone have recent experiencies with installing Bacula file daemon to
Windows 95 system?
The latest manual says "we have coded to support Win95, but have no longer a
system for testing". Same phrase exists already in the oldest manual version
I have available, that is 1.38.2 manual of November 2005. I used to have
1.36 manuals, but obviously I have deleted it already.
I have a few old(!) currently-not-backed-up Windows 95 systems that are
essential due to some special software that does not run on newer (NT-based)
systems, and I'd like to have a backup of them for the unwanted case
something nasty would happen some day. I don't have a pure test system
available either, and I wouldn't like to start building a one, and I would
like to limit error-and-horror-style testing to very minimum on these old
production systems. So good advices ("recycle those ancient systems" is not
consired a good one here) would be appreciated.
I have 2.2.8 director and storage daemon, and aim to keep them up-to-date in
the future too. AFAIK, file daemon doesn't have to be of the same version,
so what might be the safest version of Windows file daemon to try? Should I
start with the latest one 2.2.8, an early bird of 2.x branch ( I do have 2.0
and 2.1 versions in my own archive although they do not seem to be available
on SF), or would a safe(r) bet be giving a try to 1.38? Or should I try to
find an even older, eg. 1.36.x client somewhere... I don't have it, and
neither it is on SF any more.
One reason that makes 1.38.10 to look temptating is the size of the
installer package, about 5 MB instead of over 10 MB 2.x packages. However,
should I avoid the 1.38 version because of possible compatibility problems
with future 3.x versions that may be available later this year?
My typical Win95 system in this case is ~100 MHz Pentium, with 32 or 64 MB
of RAM. Any chances I could get Bacula running on them? My goal is just to
have a very basic "copy all files" backup with no extra fine tuning.
