Officially you are supposed to use a client version that is lower than or equal to the server version. Using it the other way may work however it is not tested by the developers. If it is not working for you I have a couple of things to check. First debian ships (or used to ship) with configs that render bacula as a local backup program only. The reason is Debian uses local host or 127.0.0.1 as the address of the storage daemon. You need to change that to the address of the nic. Second for many if not all the default configuration generated in the install of the windows client is horribly broken. For some reason the installer generates a bad config for the monitor so you will need to edit the bacula-fd.conf file on each client. Third the windows firewall will block bacula by default. You will need to add a rule to allow bacula-fd through the firewall.
