A lot of what's going on here is that since Oracle took over MySQL when
they bought out Sun, they have been doing huge amounts of work to update
it, clean up long-standing bugs, make it more strictly SQL compliant,
and eliminate dependencies on the legacy MyISAM storage engine (which
will eventually be deprecated).
