Cran admits that the wartime mentality lingered in other strange
ways. "I used to say, 'I'm not going to go on holiday to Germany.'
Italy and France, yes, but Germany, no. My big thing was not buying a
German car. When I finally bought an Audi a few years ago, I had to
think about it very hard." He laughs in mild self-amazement. "So you
could say my war ended in 2002."
