Do you mean in Middle Eastern culture? Why was this unthinkable?
Was it based on the assumption that men and women cannot relate in any way
other than sex, so that if they are in the same room, there must
be something immoral going on?
Was there no recognition that men and women could simply talk,
and show friendship? Is that what was unthinkable?
