Yes, you would need to use the choke esp. when it is cold.  Turn off the
choke slowly as the engine becomes warm/faster.

Best is to do this in the following sequence:

1.  Come to a stop.  (It is always safe to have the engine running till you
come to a complete stop.  Coasting is not safe in case you want to make a
last minute manoeuvre).

2.  Turn off the Engine Kill Switch.

3.  Turn off the key.
