The Red River formation underlies almost all of the Williston
Basin. In the area east of the Nesson Anticline there have
been very few deep test wells. Most have only drilled to the
Madison. Until the Bakken play only a handful of vertical
holes were drilled to test the Bakken/Sanish or maybe the Duperow.
In other words, the deeper zones are virtually unexplored
in central/east Mountrail County and the rest of the eastern
Williston Basin.
Along the Nesson Anticline and on the western side of the basin
there are numerous deeper zones which currently produce oil and gas
including; Bird Bear/Nisku, Duperow, Souris River, Ashern,
Winnipegosis, several zones in the upper and lower Interlake,
Stonewall, Gunton, Winnipeg...and a few more I don't recall
right now...along with the Red River. All of these formations
are present in Mountrail County and most of the eastern
basin. I don't know any reason why anyone would rule out
production from any or most of these zones at sometime in
the future. Perhaps the large seismic programs which are/have
been conducted over some of these areas will lead to better
drill site selection and new discoveries in deep zones.
We can only be optimistic about the potential of the
Williston Basin. In 57 years of drilling we have only
made a good start!
