Total footage drilled in 1981 was 7,804,361.

The NDIC only has data thru 2005 at their site
https://www.dmr.nd.gov/oilgas/stats/DrillStats.PDF

In 2008 there will be about 800 wells drilled with an average footage
of 16,000 for a total footage of  12,800,000

Thus in terms of feet drilled 2008 will set a record.
