SEPSIS
Infection of a wound or body tissues with bacteria that leads to the
formation of pus (see: suppuration) or to multiplication of the bacteria in
the blood. If the blood becomes infected with bacteria that the immune system
can eradicate entirely or prevent from multiplying excessively, the condition
is known as bacteremia. However, if bacteria that form toxins are present in
the blood in large numbers and are multiplying rapidly, the condition (as a
result of toxemia and bacteremia) is called septicemia (blood poisoning).
