Pregnant Women Should Be Screened for E-coli Pregnant women should have their urine routinely screened for strains of e-coli bacteria that can cause miscarriage or serious infections in newborns, a new report recommends. Researchers at the University of Minnesota isolated a strain of e-coli 0:157 bacteria in the urine of a woman who miscarried 22 weeks into her pregnancy (Reuters 6/4). E-coli bacteria live harmlessly in the digestive system, but are constantly evolving. E-coli, a common cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs), is present in women in 27 percent of premature births and 17 percent of prenatal deaths. An inexpensive screen for the bacteria on urine samples of all pregnant women to look for virulent strains could help reduce the number of premature births and miscarriages, the investigators told Reuters Health. Currently, between 12 and 18 percent of all births in the U.S. are premature. The U.S. ranks 28th of 29 industrialized countries in this regard. Researchers said that a screening for e-coli would add $10 to $15 to the cost of a standard urine test for a pregnant woman. They presented their findings at the 99th American Society for Microbiology meeting in Chicago in late May. Riefna Azwita Fahmi Test System Unit RisTI - Telkom Jl.
