EATING AND SLEEPING

Formula or breast milk continues to play an important nutritional role for the entire
first year. After the first year, the biggest change is the more rapid introduction of
new foods. For the first 12 months, new foods should be introduced one at a time, with
a few days in between to be alert for allergies. After age one, though, the
probability of allergies decreases.

As your baby becomes more mobile, breastfeedings and bottle feedings will tend to
decline. Babies this age would rather explore than be held and fed. Many of the
nutritional reasons for nursing have passed by this age, so the need to nurse is more
psychological than physical.

If you are wondering if it is time to give up nursing altogether, try to follow your
child's lead. If she wants to stop nursing, she will become restless during feedings.
Some mothers feel hurt by their baby's refusal to nurse. It's important to realize
that it's not a rejection. It's just one of the many milestones of this period.
