KOSOVO'S STATUS REMAINS UNCLEAR

MOSCOW, April 14 (RIA Novosti) - Kosovo's status remains unclear after a
recent meeting of Kosovo Contact Group delegates in Belgrade and Pristina.

The delegates agreed that Kosovo's final status should be discussed and
accepted by all the negotiating parties, including Belgrade and the
non-Albanian population in the autonomous region. It would be premature to
make any forecasts, the Foreign Ministry press service said, citing Deputy
Foreign Minister Vladimir Chizhov, who attended the meeting from April 11 to
13.

Group members, represented by Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Russia, the
United States and France spoke with the top leaders of Serbia, Serbia and
Montenegro, Kosovo, the Kosovo-Albania opposition and Kosovar Serbs. UN
mission head in Kosovo Soren Jessen-Petersen and Kosovo Force commander
General Yves de Kermabon also attended the meeting.

The attendants heard the report on the implementation of the Standards for
Kosovo plan, which, in compliance with Security Council resolution 1244,

serves as a basis for further discussions on the final status of Kosovo.

According to the ministry press office, progress is being made, but a final
solution is still far off. Group members stressed the importance of
protecting the rights of non-Albanians in order to establish a stable,
multinational and democratic society in the region, as well as the
decentralization of the local government.
