Bush has used a speech in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, to praise the Georgian people for their courage in overthrowing an undemocratic regime in a popular revolt in 2003. Bush delivered the speech to a crowd of more than 100,000 Georgians, gathered in Tbilisi's Freedom Square. Earlier, Bush met with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili. Following their talks, Bush told reporters that he had offered Saakashvili US support in searching for a peaceful resolution to Georgia's disputes with the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Explosions in Baghdad kill seven At least seven Iraqis have been killed and dozens of others injured in two suicide car bomb explosions in Baghdad. The first blast occurred near a US military convoy and was close to the site of a double suicide car bombing on Saturday that killed 22 people. The second bomb blew up near a police station on the banks of the Tigris River. Meanwhile, US Marines have stepped up an operation against insurgents near Iraq's border with Syria. US military officials say at least 75 insurgents have been killed in the operation since Sunday. Five Marines have also died. No news as captors' deadline passes There is no new information on the fate of a kidnapped Australian man in Iraq after his captors' deadline expired. Douglas Wood was kidnapped about two weeks ago. His kidnappers threatened to kill him by Tuesday morning if Australian and other coalition forces failed to withdraw from Iraq. In another hostage taking, Japan's Foreign Ministry has confirmed that a Japanese man has been kidnapped in Iraq. An Islamic militant group said earlier that it had captured a Japanese national who had been working at a US base in Iraq. Tokyo said that the kidnapping would not affect its troop deployment in the country. Germany unveils Holocaust memorial A ceremony has been held in Berlin, to open Germany's new Holocaust memorial. It was attended by leading German politicians, including President Horst Koehler and Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, as well as members of Germany's Jewish community and Holocaust survivors. The memorial is a field of more than 2,700 grey gravestone-like slabs, and was designed by US architect Peter Eisenman. An underground information centre was added to the original plan at the request of the German government. It complements the field of pillars with personal stories of individual Jews across Europe who were killed by the Nazis. The memorial is located near Brandenburg Gate in the heart of the German capital. Fischer receives Leo Baeck Award The German Central Council of Jews has awarded the Leo Baeck Award to German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer. The award is given each year to honor those whose efforts have improved relations with Jews and Israel. At the ceremony in Berlin, the council said that Fischer was given the prize for his mediation efforts in the Middle East. The council went on to say that Fischer had succeeded in learning from the mistakes of Germany's Nazi past. EU, Russia sign co-operation accord Russia and the European Union have signed an agreement to forge closer trade and political ties. The accord was signed at a summit in Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin said he hoped the agreement would help create a Europe without dividing lines. The president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso said the accord would provide a new impulse to relations with Moscow. A Russian foreign ministry statement said the two sides had agreed to hold further consultations aimed at easing visa regulations. The European Union has shared a common border with Russia, since the EU expanded last year to include several eastern European countries. Rafsanjani to run for president in Iran Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani is to be a candidate in Iran's presidential election on June 17. A close aide told news agencies in Tehran that the 70-year-old former president would officially declare his candidacy and his reasons for running later in the day. Rafsanjani is seen as a moderate conservative who favours closer ties with the West. He currently heads the Expediency Council. That's the country's top political arbitration body. Rafsanjani was Iran's president from 1989 to 1997. Deutsche Boerse tie-up with Euronext? One of Deutsche Boerse's main shareholders, London-based hedge fund TCI, has proposed a merger of the Frankfurt stock exchange with its continental European competitor Euronext. On Monday, TCI forced the resignation of Deutsche Boerse chief executive Werner Seifert after the Frankfurt stock exchange abandoned plans to take over its London counterpart. A TCI director said in a newspaper interview that a tie-up with Euronext, the operator of the French exchange, would make more sense than a merger with London. Denmark beats Germany 3-2 in hockey In sports: Germany has failed to clinch a place in the A Pool of international ice hockey for another year. The national team could have avoided relegation to the B Pool by earning at least a tie against Denmark. But Denmark beat Germany 3-2 in its last relegation-round game at the World Ice Hockey Championship in Austria.
