   Bush visits Georgian capital

US President George W. Bush has used a speech in the Georgian
capital, Tbilisi, to praise the Georgian people for their courage in
overthrowing an undemocratic regime in a popular revolt in 2003.
Bush delivered the speech to a crowd of more than 100,000 Georgians,
gathered in Tbilisi's Freedom Square. Earlier, Bush met with
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili. Following their talks, Bush
told reporters that he had offered Saakashvili US support in
searching for a peaceful resolution to Georgia's disputes with the
breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

   Explosions in Baghdad kill seven

At least seven Iraqis have been killed and dozens of others injured
in two suicide car bomb explosions in Baghdad. The first blast
occurred near a US military convoy and was close to the site of a
double suicide car bombing on Saturday that killed 22 people. The
second bomb blew up near a police station on the banks of the Tigris
River. Meanwhile, US Marines have stepped up an operation against
insurgents near Iraq's border with Syria. US military officials say
at least 75 insurgents have been killed in the operation since
Sunday. Five Marines have also died.

No news as captors' deadline passes

There is no new information on the fate of a kidnapped Australian
man in Iraq after his captors' deadline expired. Douglas Wood was
kidnapped about two weeks ago. His kidnappers threatened to kill him
by Tuesday morning if Australian and other coalition forces failed
to withdraw from Iraq. In another hostage taking, Japan's Foreign
Ministry has confirmed that a Japanese man has been kidnapped in
Iraq. An Islamic militant group said earlier that it had captured a
Japanese national who had been working at a US base in Iraq. Tokyo
said that the kidnapping would not affect its troop deployment in
   the country.

   Germany unveils Holocaust memorial

A ceremony has been held in Berlin, to open Germany's new Holocaust
memorial. It was attended by leading German politicians, including
President Horst Koehler and Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, as well as
members of Germany's Jewish community and Holocaust survivors. The
memorial is a field of more than 2,700 grey gravestone-like slabs,
and was designed by US architect Peter Eisenman. An underground
information centre was added to the original plan at the request of
the German government. It complements the field of pillars with
personal stories of individual Jews across Europe who were killed by
the Nazis. The memorial is located near Brandenburg Gate in the
   heart of the German capital.

   Fischer receives Leo Baeck Award

The German Central Council of Jews has awarded the Leo Baeck Award
to German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer. The award is given each
year to honor those whose efforts have improved relations with Jews
and Israel. At the ceremony in Berlin, the council said that Fischer
was given the prize for his mediation efforts in the Middle East.
The council went on to say that Fischer had succeeded in learning
from the mistakes of Germany's Nazi past.

   EU, Russia sign co-operation accord

Russia and the European Union have signed an agreement to forge
closer trade and political ties. The accord was signed at a summit
in Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin said he hoped the
agreement would help create a Europe without dividing lines. The
president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso said the
accord would provide a new impulse to relations with Moscow. A
Russian foreign ministry statement said the two sides had agreed to
hold further consultations aimed at easing visa regulations. The
European Union has shared a common border with Russia, since the EU
expanded last year to include several eastern European countries.

Rafsanjani to run for president in Iran

Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani is to be a candidate in Iran's presidential
election on June 17. A close aide told news agencies in Tehran that
the 70-year-old former president would officially declare his
candidacy and his reasons for running later in the day. Rafsanjani
is seen as a moderate conservative who favours closer ties with the
West. He currently heads the Expediency Council. That's the
country's top political arbitration body. Rafsanjani was Iran's
   president from 1989 to 1997.

   Deutsche Boerse tie-up with Euronext?

One of Deutsche Boerse's main shareholders, London-based hedge fund
TCI, has proposed a merger of the Frankfurt stock exchange with its
continental European competitor Euronext. On Monday, TCI forced the
resignation of Deutsche Boerse chief executive Werner Seifert after
the Frankfurt stock exchange abandoned plans to take over its London
counterpart. A TCI director said in a newspaper interview that a
tie-up with Euronext, the operator of the French exchange, would
make more sense than a merger with London.

Denmark beats Germany 3-2 in hockey

In sports: Germany has failed to clinch a place in the A Pool of
international ice hockey for another year. The national team could
have avoided relegation to the B Pool by earning at least a tie
against Denmark. But Denmark beat Germany 3-2 in its last
relegation-round game at the World Ice Hockey Championship in
Austria. This means whether Germany remains in the A Pool will
depend on the outcome of Wednesday's game between Austria and
   Slovenia.
