Tika Protest Letter of Northern Kosovo Metohija's Serbian Journalists May 5th 2005-05-07 Kosovska Mitrovica Northern Kosovo Metohija's Serbian journalists have been facing with additional problems for some time which disable them to do their job properly. Due to the entire situation in Kosovo and Metohija, the journalists are deprived from freedom of movement like other Kosovo Metohija's Serbs. However, transport is provided to them only when UNMIK estimates it will serve to its interests. The journalists cannot get transport when need to renew press cards, go to a potentially Serbian mass grave site, pay visits to the so-called enclaves etc. On the other hand, the DPI is very eager to take them wherever and whenever comes out a media opportunity for a positive image of Kosovo; for instance the SRSG's and PISG's visits to rare returning sites or anything that would portray in public honoring the standards. It opens a floor for a speculation of UNMIK's partiality. On numerous occasions, there is a strict selection of media to cover various events (the last was the excavation of the mass grave in Klina, when were invited only 2 Serbian media versus bunch of Albanian journalists), but also visits paid by the SRSG or any other VIP to the region. It happens often that translation either from English, or Albanian into Serbian is not available at UNMIK's press points or briefings. The Serbian journalists cannot properly follow the briefings and ask questions. Following the all above mentioned, we are kindly asking UNMIK DPI for an urgent meeting with a person in charge. Having no intention to politicize our request, we need concrete answers to our questions; first of all who or what is the reason that causes such problems and what is the way to find a solution to our mutual benefit. To conclude, we do not want anything more than a possibility to do our job in a regular way. Yours sincerely, Northern Kosovo Metohija Serbian journalists Yahoo!
