I can confirm that there is a problem with balsa, probabely in running g_spawn_async_with_pipes. As a test, I ran it with a stupid three-liner which emits with a delay a few lines of text as replacement of gpg, and balsa accumulates several megabytes from it's stderr... not sure about the reason yet, though!
