The gtk3 branch was recently patched to build with GMime 2.6, using a spray of ifdef's. See commit http://git.gnome.org/browse/balsa/commit/?h=gtk3&id=1947b1be7b13f6c3876dd3b53dd3ab52634fff01 The GMime code in that branch should have been the same as master, prior to that commit, so the corresponding patch should apply to master without too much work. Should at least save someone some work.
