additional (minor) git issue

I see a .cvsignore, but not a .gitignore.  Even including the former in  
the latter, and adding some obvious lines (*.o) "git status" still  
shows me lots of untracked files.  Short of doing a fresh clone, and  
adding every file that only shows up after doing autogen, does anyone  
already have an appropriate .gitignore that might be added to git?
