Madura Island is not as famous as Bali. But recent development of
Jembatan Suramadu (Suramadu Bridge) has been a magnet of attention to
Madura as the new destination for investment and tourism. Suramadu
connects Surabaya and Madura over the sea of Selat Madura. For
centuries before, people have to cross over with boat. So, Suramadu is
a huge breakthrough.

Madura is not a common tourist attraction. But I’m curious to find out
what interesting in the island. So I planned a short escape to Madura
with a couple of friends: Carlos, Chris, dr Angga and Alex.

The entrance gate is near Kenjeran, Surabaya. We have to pay for the
car toll fee. It costs us IDR 30,000 for one way trip; it means that
we spent IDR 60,000 for round trip. It’s far cheaper if you ride with
two-wheelers, costs you IDR 3,000 only! But I tell you what, on the
day we crossed; I saw 200 meters of long queue on the motorcycle toll
gate

The bridge has 5.4 kilometers long and it takes only 10 minutes ride
to reach Madura. The main attraction of Suramadu is the middle
section. Many vehicles turn to slow down and take pictures. It’s
forbidden to stop our vehicle along the bridge so I opened the window
and started taking pictures. Hard to get a proper angle but it’s ok.
Oh, it’s a bit cold and foggy right there. Under the bridge on the
Madura side, lots of people take advantage of Suramadu euphoria. Food
stalls and kiosks are available, but I’m not interested.

We ride all around with empty stomach and found nothing –since we’re
clueless about the island. We lost direction a few times and
desperately I wish I could found KFC and ate black pepper crispy
chicken (forget it!). Finally we ended up with coconut delight (at
somewhere I forget). Cost me IDR 2,000 for a glass of fresh coconut
water. Put extra IDR 2,000 to enjoy the whole coconut. The coconut
seller is quite friendly and thought that we’re TV crews hoho..

After I made some calls to my native Madura fellow (thx Evelyn). We
got a recommendation of famous Madura cuisine near Alun-alun
Bangkalan, about 20 minutes ride from Suramadu. It’s “Warung Amboina”.
Well, the place is very very small but lot of people came in and out.
We ordered their specialty, five Nasi Campur Madura (mix rice) and Teh
Tawar (plain tea).

Interestingly, instead of took a note on a piece of paper, the owner
write our order on his little desk with a little white chalk. I didn’t
understand what he wrote about, it was like a code or sumthing. I’m
not sure that Robert Langdon (of Da Vinci Code) could understand the
code too haha..

Nasi Campur Madura is quite a simple dish. You’ll get a plate of rice
with meat, innards (jerohan), half boiled egg and coconut milk soup on
top of it. The best part of Madura cuisine is the chili sambal. It’s
simply grinded with salt but tastes really strong and spicy. I love
the fried crispy Paru (ox-lung) but disappointed with the small
portion. Ouch.

The price is quite expensive even for Surabayan like us A plate of
Nasi Campur costs me IDR 13,000 and IDR 3,000 for the plain tea. Maybe
some ingredients must transported from Surabaya and it takes extra
cost for that.

Well, that’s not the end of this little escape. We went to a century
old Sembilangan Lighthouse. Continued..
