Well, after lots of trial and error I have gotten further than I was before.

I still don't think I am doing this right.

I downloaded the source 17.2 and I was able to run ./configure using mysql 
option and got call the way through.  Then ran make and got an error about 
missing a ";".

I am hoping someone can point me to a document that lists the steps for 
building, installing and configuring  from source.  Once I have things 
running I know how to configure the deamons, etc.
