Dear collected wisdom,

in his very first Sett of Lessons, Thomas Mace gives one of his Lessons a
(to me) rather curious name: Cozen-German". Can any of you enlighten me
about the possible meaning of this name. Straightforwardly (according to the
vocabulary), it would be "cheat-german", but I'm not sure whether it is some
pun regarding Germans in general (cheat a german - cheating the german way?)
some reference to the political situation of the time, or something else
that escapes me. Could it possibly be something like a "Fake-Allmain"?

Any help is definitely appreciated!

Best regards,

Peter Steur
Moncalieri (Italy)
