 Pure goodwill? (doubtful)
Either way we all do appreciate the work.
Our interest is closer to goodwill that you may think. You probably know that
Net Direct is a Linux solution provider located in the same city as Research in
Motion, in fact they are a customer. (That's not really that impressive, as you
can imagine lots of Waterloo companies work with RIM.) This really means two
things. We all use Linux on our desktops and our choice of PDA is the
Blackberry. We also have a real desire not to use Windows if at all possible so
we started work on Barry for our own needs. We also saw it as "paying it
forward" for all the great open source software we use in our customer's
solutions and our own office. We do contribute to other projects when the need
arises, just not as much as the value we receive. Finally there is value in
sharing development work.

Now we do hope that it's able to turn into something that justifies itself,
and there are lots of ways that it can.  The fact that more people know about
Net Direct and what we do helps. We've had business partners look at it as a
sign of commitment to open source. Some people at RIM look at it that way too,
I just hope their legal department does as well. However it still has yet to
result in a sale of consulting services or hardware sales but sometimes that is
hard to track and as with many types of exposure it can take time to work.

Our work on Barry has given us a better sense of what it takes to create and
manage and open source project. It's taken a while to build the project so that
it attracted developers, but we are quite glad to see lots of people enjoying
the project so far and contributing.
