I'm quite sure RIM's software does. I've restored a few times using it.
Barry backs it up also. If I explode the archive, in Messages are all my
mails...

I don't think the RIM Windows Desktop software backs up messages either...
I'll have to double check.
Try opening the resulting backup file in a hex editor, or with 'less'
and look for email messages.
