Yes, that's a valid way to do it.  It also keeps the email conversation
in the patch file, just in case you want to save the patch and understand
it later.

Well, so much for that idea. :-)  The numbers didn't change from the
previous error messages reported by the backup software.

The next step would be to get a USB capture from a Windows backup, restore,
and sync, from a person with a device in a similar state.

Have you ever tried that before?  It requires a Windows machine,
preferrably XP, or any Windows in a USB-capable VM.
