Make sure you have all the dependencies as listed on the dependency page:

With all dependencies installed, it should mostly build fresh out of the
git repo, thanks to the testing that Eric did, but there is one bug left
over in the gettext discovery during ./configure.
You will probably have to add "-lintl -liconv" (without the quotes)
to the end of all the LDADD lines in tools/Makefile.am.
I don't yet know why configure isn't detecting this properly.
Give it a try, and let us know any errors you encounter.
