Thanks for the notes.  For some of the issues, it seems like it would
have made sense to use the debian/ build scripts to create a binary
package.

Hmmmm... /etc/ld.so.conf should have /usr/local/lib listed there already.
If not, maybe it should be added, and ldconfig run as root.
