Thanks for the logic summary.

Is it possible for the BlackBerry application to send a NOOP command
if the user hasn't selected anything in 5 seconds?  This would seem to
be the simplest method, and would give you a way to make sure the connection
is valid, whereas a 15min timeout would not.
