yes that's the kind of access needed. we'll see how we get on and report back. with only one Affy chip in existence for the forseeable future in our field (mosquitoes) the Java hash in memory should be OK (and I'm sure we can make that more memory efficient if we try). thanks all for the comments - let's put this to bed now.
