Since you asked, yes: On Emcit, I can participate without having to
enter into a business relationship with Cheryl. She therefore gains no
lawful right to spam and otherwise carpet-bomb me with marketing (_not_
just on the site but also everywhere else), and I am not bound by a
business contract she's written. Nor does she try to prohibit me from
finding ways to skip inline advertising.

(Despite not paying money to LJ when you open a 'basic account', you are
indeed entering into a formal business relationship as their customer,
and are forming a contract.)

I also have excellent reason to trust to Cheryl's ethics in that and all
other aspects of her site, and equally excellent reason (cited) to
be skeptical of that of LJ's management and its (mostly pseudonymous)
Abuse Team.

In general: Cheryl's a friend whom I know and trust. LJ is a business,
that I don't know, have zero reason to trust, and have no desire to enter
into a customer relationship with. (They may be fine people; that's not
the point.)
