This time around we're sticking to SF instead of 
including fantasy.  Largely that's because the kids who 
are interested in fantasy are already finding it pretty 
well on their own, while the ones who are interested in 
SF (or could be) are at a bit of a loss.

They don't have to be easy reading.

They should be age appropriate to kids thirteen and 
under.  Largely that's a question of the point of the 
violence (i.e. is it completely gratuitous?) and how 
graphic the depiction is.  "Mutilated in horrible ways" 
works better for this age group than "he took his knife 
and [insert explicit details]"
