Called to order at 20:00 with 21 people in attendance A Party Jar was established. JC read the minutes of 1400, and were accepted as: Barbara, what’s the other guy look like? Treasurer Reported that we have money. Tune in next week for more... VP had nothing fannish to report President was MIA with Secretary Announcements DaveG: Orphan black starts up Saturday, after Doctor Who. JC: Trying to get rid of furniture. Hutch, big table & round table. $50 ea. Contact him. [Noel followed on that he also had items for sale...] Harold: Zelda-thon has begun! $15K so far for the Wilds Foundation. zeldathon.net Bill & Carole Have a couple book cases they are looking to get rid of. Fred: Rooms for NaSFic will be closing on June 10th. Valerie: Finished writing her book Women in Doctor Who today! Reviews Carole: PenWAG art wear 2017, had garments entered, got good reviews. Bill followed on that 4 other BASFAns participated in this. GotG: Enjoyed it very much. Worth full price. Bill followed: Film makers had fun making it, and it showed. Stan Lee cameo fun. Stay to the end. Wonder Woman: Really enjoyed it. Stayed true to the canonical WW. No Easter eggs. JC: Beth really liked it - saw it 3 times already! Absolutely fantastic. Valerie: Technically there were so Easter eggs in the film (though not in the credits). She found it excellent. DaveC: Heard it was good enough to be a Marvel Movie - Carole said better! ChrisO: Glad the made a good DC movie. Lisa: Loved it. Liked it better than the Marvel, which she finds bloody. Bill: Yes, not a lot of blood but it was still dark (it’s a war movie). Fred: 3-D IMAX with Comix DL. Worth it. LA Times essay: Why I cried through the fight scenes in WW by Meredith Woerner. JohnO: All the Amazons were professional athletes, not models faking it. The armor was more useful than a chain mail bikini. DaveG: Gal Godot will be on Graham Norton this week on BBCA. Bill: This one had a sense of humor that the other DC films were lacking. There’s also a book called the Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore. Good info about the family of WW’s creator. Noel: Patty Jenkins being assigned the director was the best thing. Gayle: There were women only showings in Austin. ManBaby complained to the Mayor, saying women hadn’t invented anything. The mayor corrected him elegantly. Ken: I am Groot. (Watch the credits). Memorial Day Activities: BayCon, didn’t see much programming but saw people they don’t normally. Clockwork Alchemy had talented people in the artist gallery, and the steampunk machinery exhibit. Valerie: Enjoyed Clockwork. It was busy. Gallery was delightful. Her dad did a steam engine demo. She had the last 2 hours of the convention for her Harry Potter talk. Her world building talk at Fanime was filled. JC: Clockwork will be at the Burlingame Hyatt in March next year. Henry Cowell Park with a 3 year old. Walking around the Redwoods is good, but there was a Civil War reenactment over at Roaring Camp. The 3yo was delightful Gerald commented that there were some Civil War battles in Ca. ChrisO: Read all but one short story finalists by John C Wright that she doesn’t want to give them any money. Season of Glass and Iron by Amal El-Mohtar is excellent turn on fairie tales. JohnO followed on that the Wright short story is worse than “Alien Stripper...” story. JohnO: Finished all the novel finalists. All the Birds in the Sky. Felt stupid for waiting a whole year to read it. It’s between that at Death’s End. Started reading the novellas, enjoying A Taste of Honey. Recommend. DaveG: Last weekend was at Sherlocked. The first one in the US, at the LAX Marriott. He would love to see that hotel imploded. However, the hotel has embarked on (yet another) remodeling project. Doors were wider, and the tub was nicer, and there were outlets with USB ports! 18th floor party suites are gone, and it’s now an executive lounge with the old 16th floor becoming suites. Rooms had 2 drawers and no closet. Don’t bother unpacking. Sherlocked was pretty decent. The organizers need some work, especially in paying for dealer’s room tables. Top level tickets were $3000, so the attendees tended to be freer with money (Spring was happy). A good convention. Gerald: SpaceX took place on Saturday. They were able to soft land the second stage as well! Getting closer to completely reusable. This launch had a reused dragon capsule. Fred: Clockwork Alchemy is March 23-25, 2018. An auction item was auctioned off... Meeting adjourned at: 21:07 and the rumor of the week was: Wonder Woman is no stick figure.
