I've tried Batik on the latest (released last weekend) Java implementation from Apple. The bizarro output problem is gone (ie. it doesn't resemble a bad hangover as much) but it's still slightly broken. It appears to have problems decided what to draw, sometimes the output is fine, sometimes there are rectangular areas missing. I would post some screenshots if I knew how to take them!
