   Good idea, here is a laundry list, a lot of these may be too big 
or too small for GSOC, but hopefully they will get the ball rolling.

  1) SVG 1.2 Vector Effects
  2) Dynamic updates of Filters
  3) Dynamic updates of Gradients (finish my gradient patch)
  4) Centralize file/element lookup (correct '#id' refs and
     improve circular reference detection).
  5) Allow DOM and GVT tree to drift.
  6) Write a Batik Rasterizer servlet.
  7) Improved PDF Text output (use glyph vector to position chars).
  8) Finish/Fix 'static' property in SVG 1.2 support
  9) Fix Use implementation (ElementInstance)
 10) Switch Batik over to Graphics Common
 11) Support tab focus
 12) Support css pseudo properties (hover, visited ...)
