    Well I did some checking, everything appears to be fine up to the
fetching of the GlyphVector.  So we correctly build a java.awt.Font
object with font family Serif (I don't have a straight 'times' font -
if I use a base font I do have - like 'times new roman' it has that as
the font family) and style = bolditalic.  But The glyphs return are
just the normal unbold/italic versions.  I suspect that the Mac OS JVM
is not properly associating things like 'Times New Roman Italic' Times
New Roman Bold' and 'Times New Roman Bold Italic' into the 'Times New
Roman' font family.

    As a _really_ ugly hack you could probably get what you want by
explicitly referencing the Italic font.  Unfortunately I don't think
there is much Batik can do here as we seem to get everything right,
and the Mac OS X JVM just doesn't do the final mapping to glyphs
correctly.
