   Well I must admit to being a little confused.  In particular the
'Pretty Printer' function  is designed to output the SVG document
as text in a nicely indented easily readable manner.  I suspect that
what you really want is the 'Print Transcoder' or one of the
Raster transcoders.

 In the opinion of this group, is this a reasonable approach, or is Batik
overkill? I would appreciate any feedback you could provide. Thanks!

If you just want to pretty print the XML then Batik may be a little bit of overkill (although you could take just the pretty printer). If you really want to render the document then I don't think Batik is overkill.
