   Actually that isn't true.  All elements in SVG have
the fill presentation attribute that is mapped to the
fill CSS property.  It is very easy for some random
bit of real CSS to override the value in the presentation
attribute however, so sometimes moving it into the
style attribute does help.

   This path is very close to a straight line (meaning it
encloses almost area).  Also the path has a fairly wide
stroke:

   So your stroke is covering up the gradient fill.  If you turn off
the stroke you can see the gradient fill working.
